Magisterial district courts have jurisdiction over criminal charges and preliminary hearings for criminal charges, misdemeanors, and felonies, including firearm violations, drug possession, assault/battery, DUI, and any other crimes that have taken place within their district. There are thirty different offices representing each district, located throughout the county.
District courts also handle traffic cases and all other violations of Title 75, The Vehicle Code, including reckless driving, driving without a license, speeding in excess of 30 miles per hour over the speed limit, and failure to stop at stop signs/red lights, etc.
Civil cases include: Landlord-tenant cases seeking possession of property and judgments up to a maximum of $12,000 and small-claims court, which deals with minor lawsuits seeking judgment up to $12,000 in value. If the value sought exceeds $12,000, you must file in the Court of Common Pleas at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, PA.
